Hitting the beach is a beloved summer tradition for just about everyone—which means crowded shorelines, limited space for beach chairs and even fewer parking spots. This summer, make a point to skip the popular hotspots and seek out the lesser-known gems for a little peace and quiet. A new survey of 3,002 locals by Frugal Flyer reveals the best secret beaches across the country—places where you can actually hear the waves and stretch out in peace.

Topping the list is Awahua Beach in Moloka'i, Hawaii. This remote black-sand beach sits at the base of the Kalaupapa Peninsula, framed by cliffs that rise 2,000 feet. Part of a national historical park that was once a leprosy settlement, Awahua is accessible only by hike, mule or small plane. The reward? Solitude, history and one of Hawaii’s most humbling coastal views.

Coming in at number two is Pa'ako Cove in Maui, Hawaii. Also known as Secret Cove, this tiny beach is hidden behind a lava rock wall in Makena. No signs. No crowds. Just a sliver of soft sand, black rock and water so clear it looks photoshopped. Blink and you’ll miss it—unless you’re in the know.

Rounding out the top three is yet another Hawaii Beach. Gray’s Beach in Oahu is right next to busy Waikiki—but worlds away in vibe. Tucked behind the Halekulani Hotel, it once belonged to Queen Liliʻuokalani's estate and still feels royal. Calm, shallow waters and killer views of Diamond Head seal the deal.

The remaining beaches in the top ten are, not surprisingly, in Oregon, California and Florida—all states with gorgeous coastlines. But the No. 10 best secret beach is somewhere far more unexpected: Crystal Lake in landlocked Vermont. Near Barton, this glacial lake with crystal-clear water is surrounded by gorgeous mountains. Once an ice-harvesting site, the lake and its beach is now a haven for swimmers, trout fishers and anyone looking for a tranquil escape.

Peruse the full list below and you'll find plenty of gems that offer alternatives to the most popular beaches, including captivating shorelines in states like Alabama, Nevada, Texas and Maine. Then start planning for that off-the-beaten-path beach trip you've always dreamed of.
