Heading out for summer vacation? You might want to pack a magnifying glass. Orkin just dropped its 2026 Bed Bug Cities List, and it turns out America’s favorite vacation spots are also highly popular destinations for the world's most frustrating hitchhikers. The rankings are based on Orkin's treatment data, where the company performed the most bed bug treatments—both residential and commercial—between May 12, 2025 and May 12, 2026.

Once again, Chicago takes home the crown nobody actually wants: America’s Number One Bed Bug Hotspot. The Windy City isn’t just famous for deep-dish pizza anymore; it’s apparently the premier luxury resort for tiny, nocturnal roommates. Rounding out the top five are Los Angeles, Detroit, Cleveland and Indianapolis. Ohio dominates the list with six cities in the top 50.

But the real news for 2026 is that bed bugs are sun-seekers too. High-growth summer tourist magnets like Tampa and Myrtle Beach have entered the charts alongside other sunny spots like Miami and San Diego. It makes sense, because these little critters love high-turnover environments, so your dream condo rental might just come with a few thousand uninvited guests.

But there's no need to panic over the news—you just need to be smart. Orkin recommends practicing the S.L.E.E.P. method to keep your luggage pest-free:

  • Search the room for apple-seed-sized bugs or tiny, ink-like spots.
  • Lift the sheets, curtains, and cushions. Yes, actually look under there.
  • Elevate your suitcases on luggage racks. The floor is lava; the bed is a launchpad.
  • Examine your bags when repacking and when you cross your own threshold.
  • Place all your clothes straight into the dryer on high heat for 30 to 45 minutes the second you get home.

Travel season is all about making memories, seeing the sights and bringing home great souvenirs. Just make sure those souvenirs don't have six legs and an appetite.
