Anyone who plans on flying this summer has likely accepted the fact that there will be delays, disruptions and even lost luggage. It’s just the way things are these days. But summer travel woes can be mitigated by taking a few simple (and perhaps one not-so-simple) steps before your trip.

The travel experts at Going.com have offered up seven travel tips that just might save you a lot of hassle when heading out on your next vacation. Vacations should be relaxing, not stressful—ever end up at your beach destination while your bathing suit is somewhere in Montana, or arrive at the airport only to realize a delay was announced an hour before you left your house? This expert advice can make smooth sailing more likely.

Here are seven things to remember when planning your vacation:
1. Give yourself plenty of time, plus even more time—everything takes longer these days, from getting to the airport to getting through security.
2. Choose a flight early in the day—statistics show that earlier flights are less likely to be canceled or delayed.
3. Book nonstop if you can—no layover means no missed flights.
4. Pack light and aim for carry-on only—you don’t really need all those shoes, and carry-on means you won’t deal with lost luggage.
5. Download the airline's app—this will allow you to check in and get your boarding pass without waiting in line, plus you’ll get notifications of any delays right to your phone.
6. Get trip protection for cancellations and travel changes—a little extra for travel insurance can be a big help.
7. Know your flight and hotel rights—know what the airlines offer, or should offer, in the case of cancellation.
