It beat out five other finalists, but you'll want to add them all to your TBR list.

It’s extremely rare for a first novel to pop off, but one book in particular this year is the cream of the crop, according to Barnes & Noble.
Seek Immediate Shelter by Vincent Yu was just named the Barnes & Noble Discover Prize Winner, beating five other titles for the spot in 2026. In what was a “robust” publishing year, B&N says booksellers across the country read hundreds of new authors to narrow down the list of books that were the most impressive.

In particular, they were looking for unforgettable, character-driven stories about friendship and family, grief and memory, the people we are (and wish to be), the world we live in (and hope to change), the bookseller said.
“It’s such a joy to spend so much time talking in depth about new writers — their prose style, their characters, the worlds they create — and their future potential with other booksellers around the country,” says Lexie Smyth, Campaign Manager for Fiction, Barnes & Noble. “Our booksellers have done a terrific job selecting the books on this shortlist, all of which represent original points of view and incredible talent.”
The winner, Seek Immediate Shelter, is about what happens in an Asian American community when a false missile alarm throws their lives into chaos.
“On an otherwise unremarkable morning, the residents of a small town in Massachusetts all receive the same alert: BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
Confronted with the options of fight or flight, planning or panicking, the people of Beckitt are stripped to their basest instincts and revealed as their truest selves. Russ squeezes his family into the bathtub, leaving his own survival in question; Nina sends an unforgivable text to her daughter; Milly confesses her unrequited love; and David hits the gas, speeding away from his wife and child.
Then the second message comes in: FALSE ALARM. PLEASE DISREGARD. ALL CLEAR. First comes relief, then comes the reckoning, as each person is forced to face the unforeseen aftermath of decisions they thought might be their last.”
B&N booksellers who helped narrow down the list to six books, say it is an exciting yet haunting read.
“I started reading Seek Immediate Shelter one night...and ended up pulling an all-nighter to finish it,” a bookseller named Cara writes. “Vincent Yu has crafted such compelling, complex characters that I found it impossible to put this debut down. Yu masterfully interweaves the lives of those from a small town as they navigate the aftermath of a false missile crisis. At the end of every chapter, I found myself asking: how would I have responded?”
According to B&N, the award is a means to champion new writers and present new stories its booksellers will “stick with readers for a very long time.”
Here are the other award finalists (with comments from booksellers) that you may want to add to your TBR list:
“New York City, East Village, 1984. A young woman with the power to see the ghosts of her friends is haunted by the one who refuses to return—a dazzling, big-hearted debut of friendship and community during a time of devastation and defiance.”
“Hopeful and life affirming in so many ways….I wanted to be a part of this friend group.”
– Jaime M., Chula Vista, California
"Natalie Adler’s debut captures the pure serendipity, boundless possibility, and the endless, unexpected Wonderland-ness of a past New York." — Miwa M., NYC
“Upward Bound is not a place anyone dreams of spending their days. The dreary adult daycare center for Los Angeles’s disabled community is, for many of its clients and staff, a place of last resort. Framing intertwined narratives—and connecting them in surprising, shattering ways—is the riveting and sometimes ironic testimony of Walter, a recent community college graduate who, after a family tragedy, must return to the company of his disabled peers.”
“Who could fail to love this book? It’s so funny and endearing and then it shakes you to your core.” – Saskia P., Lone Tree, Colorado
“The joy of bookselling is finding the right book for the right reader, matching up titles with what someone needs, not what we wish for them to read and love. However, then there are books that have such wide appeal, such universal themes, such endless uniqueness and honesty that every single person who experiences it will be forever changed. Woody Brown's debut novel Upward Bound is that book. A novel so inventive, so full of life and love, yet realistic and truthful about life's struggles and experiences. … I cannot tell you how much each and every person can benefit from reading this amazing short novel.” — Donald K., Allen Park, Michigan
“A traditional American woman, a ‘tradwife’ influencer, suddenly awakens in the brutal reality of 1855—where she must unravel whether this living nightmare is an elaborate hoax, a twisted reality show, or something far more sinister in this sensational debut novel.”
“This book feels like part of an ongoing conversation in culture, which feels exciting.” – Delaney P., Ventura, California
“I loved, loved, loved this book! The premise is original, the political/gender role/social media commentary scathing, and the resolution satisfying. I am amazed at the skill of this first time writer. In particular, her ability to create characters that get you as a reader to react was wonderful….This is one I've been talking up wholeheartedly to friends, family, and customers, and so far the response back has been great!” — Dave A., Doylestown, Pennsylvania
“The Flynn family is coming undone. Catherine and Bud’s open marriage has reached its breaking point as their daughters spiral in their own chaotic orbits: Abigail, the eldest, is dating a man in his twenties nicknamed War Crime Wes; Louise, the middle child, maintains a secret correspondence with an online terrorist; the brilliant youngest, Harper, is being sent to wilderness reform camp due to her insistence that someone—or something—is monitoring the town’s citizens. Casting a shadow across their lives, and their small coastal town, is Paul Alabaster, a billionaire shipping magnate. Rumors of corruption circulate, but no one dares dig too deep. No one except Harper, whose obsession with a mysterious shipping container exposes a criminal conspiracy that unwittingly endangers her family—a crisis that just may bring them closer together.”
“Wonderfully funny and unique.” – Shayne G., Wyomissing, Pennsylvania
“Feels like a true discovery. Cash writes with a voice that does not feel like an imitation of anyone else.” – Kevin B., Fullerton, California
“After an involuntary retirement from his high-flying Hollywood career, Stafford Hopkins has retreated to a luxury estate on Maui, along with his wife Agnes, both grimly resigned to life in a paradise where neither feels fully at home. Stafford is ready to retreat into himself, too, when a letter arrives with shocking news. Stafford has been named guardian of four children he didn’t know existed: the grandchildren of his late childhood friend, Bobby Shepherd, whose ghost Stafford can no longer ignore. Returning to both the hardscrabble farming town and the dark secret he’d tried to forget for decades, Stafford is forced to confront his past in order to rebuild his future—and to redirect the fates of his family and the four young people suddenly in his care.”
“A good story of a messy life, and who doesn’t relate?!” – Tara S., Columbia, Tennessee
“I loved this story of academic-turned-retired television executive Stafford Hopkins, his prickly wife Agnes, and the world they inhabit and build for themselves….You'll root for Stafford and Agnes and their second chance at building the life they were meant to live. A beautiful and uplifting must-read book for fans of Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove and Patrick Ryan's Buckeye. — Laura R., NYC
