The Historic Hotel Bethlehem bridges past and present as an upscale retreat

While some travelers seek out a sleek, modern hotel experience with cutting edge design and technology, others increasingly crave character, soul and a genuine connection to the past. The USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice awards for the best historic hotels in the U.S. celebrate this enduring appeal, honoring timeless accommodations that have safeguarded their distinct heritage through decades—and even centuries—of change.
And taking the top spot this year, yet again, is the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a local landmark that has won the honor six years running in an unmatched winning streak. (It first earned first place in 2021 after finishing third in 2019 and second in 2020.)

The site itself reflects deep American roots. A hotel structure has occupied the land since 1741, though the property notably served as a convalescence home for World War I soldiers before the current building opened in 1922. Today, visitors in the Lower Lobby can learn about its storied past before stepping out into the heart of historic Moravian Bethlehem. Guests enjoy an ideal blend of 1920s grandeur and modern luxury amenities, from world-class dining to an upscale spa and boutique shopping.
Joining the Pennsylvania standout in the contest's top three are two legendary Southern retreats. At number two is the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa in Point Clear, Alabama. First opened in 1847 with just 40 rooms, this coastal enclave served as a Civil War hospital and a WWII training site. Today, it spans five buildings with over 400 rooms, a luxurious spa, championship golf and a daily afternoon cannon firing over Mobile Bay.
At number three is The Peabody in Memphis, Tennessee. Known as the grande dame of Southern hospitality, this historic hotel dates back to 1869 (and its current site since 1925). It offers opulent dining, rich history and world-famous resident ducks.
