The airline's new planes will feature rows with permanent tables instead of a middle seat, for extra elbow room

Let’s be honest: nobody likes the middle seat on a flight. It’s cramped, awkward and someone always takes your armrest. But United Airlines has come up with a solution that turns airline travel’s most dreaded real estate into a luxury amenity.
Say hello to the ultimate buffer zone. United has announced that its new fleet of Airbus A321XLR aircraft will feature a special row in Economy Plus where the middle seat is permanently replaced with a custom-designed shared table.
This bona fide upgrade is designed to give window and aisle passengers the ultimate stretch-out experience, with plenty of elbow room. Here's what lucky travelers can expect from this new row:
This middle seat makeover comes hot on the heels of United's new Relax Row option, a couch-style setup available on international flights that converts a row of seats into one space where you can stretch out and sleep, with a custom mattress pad, blanket and pillows.
According to United’s Executive VP and Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Nocella, "Our customers are going to love all these new options." And who wouldn't love a guaranteed buffer zone between the stranger sitting next to you?
United expects to be the only U.S. airline offering this unique setup. The new seating will debut on all 50 of United's new Airbus A321XLRs. Domestic flights kick off later this fall, with international routes launching in early 2027.
The premium narrowbody plane also boasts some seriously high-tech perks, including 4K OLED screens with Bluetooth at every seat, massive overhead bins and even a dedicated rear snack bar for those mid-flight cravings.
These new middle-seat-free rows will go on sale later this year. So if you're planning a trip, you might want to book early, and get ready for a new era of comfy flights.
