When should cruises set sail again?

Finally, it seems like someone is asking our opinion on how things are carried forward. After extending its no-sail order until October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put out a 28-question survey asking folks to reveal their thoughts regarding the future of the cruise industry.

The agency put out a notice for "information related to cruise ship planning and infrastructure, resumption of passenger operations." The garnered data will "be used to inform future public health guidance and preventative measures relating to travel on cruise ships."

The survey deals with every aspect of the cruise industry, from the benefits involved in testing all passengers and crew members before each departure to potential travel restrictions that might disrupt previously planned trips.

Sample questions include: Should cruise ship operators limit shore excursions? To what extent and for how long should cruise ship operators reduce passenger capacity? What should be the medical capacity to manage an outbreak or a severe case of COVID-19 on board the ship? How should cruise ship operators decrease or eliminate the risk for COVID-19 transmission for both passengers and crew in the following group settings? Read through the entire questionnaire right here.

Folks interested in submitting their thoughts can do so until September 21, either by mail or online

Cruise companies, which have been public about their decisions to halt services entirely or partially for the next few months, seem to be happy about the CDC's actions. "We welcome the CDC’s request for information related to the eventual restart of cruise operations in the U.S. and look forward to working together to determine the best path forward," Bari Golin-Blaugrund, the senior director for strategic communications for Cruise Lines International Association, said to USA Today. We wholeheartedly agree.
