Situated on a private 30-acre lot surrounded by scrub brush and an endless horizon, this incredible Airbnb is fashioned into a chic see-through dome. You can leave the curtains open and experience sunsets, sunrises and extraordinary stargazing. Or if you’re more private, close them and keep the coyotes guessing.

This rental is 13 miles from Joshua Tree National Park in California and can be home base for your travel adventures. The main dome is a bedroom with a queen sized mattress and sofa, while an attached secondary dome holds the restroom (the propane-heated shower and another toilet is outside). The whole shebang is powered by the sun—and since this is a desert, you’ll get plenty of that. Luckily, an evaporative cooler will take the edge off. Deserts can also get cold at night depending on the season, so there’s a space heater and a warming pad for the bed.

The connected bathroom dome has a toilet and sink vanity, with curtains pulled to the side. Outside, desert landscape is visible.

Outside on the deck, there’s a stove, grill, Adirondack chairs, firepit and a picnic table. There’s even a wood-fired hot tub. Heating it up can take several hours, but that’s just part of the slow joy of being immersed in nature and doing things for yourself.

The domes sit at the back of the wooden patio with grill, tables and metal hot tub.

There may be spectacular wildlife sightings if you’re quiet and let creatures pass by—included the protected desert tortoise. During the day, you can see the typical squirrels, birds and lizards, but at night more interesting beasts may go on their rounds: scorpions, jackrabbits, coyotes and more. You can also bring your own wildlife: four-legged pets can accompany you for a small up-charge.

Although this complex is powered by the sun, you will find an outlet to charge your phone or computer—but hopefully you’re leaving devices alone when the view is this amazing.
