Come for the noodles, stay for a sunset Pilates class, an outdoor movie and a salsa session.

Oakridge Park is giving Vancouverites an increasing number of reasons to abandon their original plans and spend the day at the mall.

The newly opened complex, home to Time Out Market Vancouver, has unveiled a packed August calendar featuring live music, dancing, workouts and movies under the stars, with plenty of opportunities to refuel between activities.

First up: music

Performers are taking over the North Atrium every Thursday through Sunday throughout August, with jazz trios, string ensembles, guitarists and quartets providing a very civilized soundtrack to your shopping.

Over at Time Out Market Vancouver, the entertainment continues with musicians and DJs scheduled throughout the week, including New Music Fridays, Saturday sets and a Sunday Supper Club with live jazz.

Then there’s movement

Those who prefer to make their own music, loudly and with their entire body, can join a free Wednesday-morning Zumba class in the North Atrium. Coffee from the Market is strongly suggested as the reward.

Lululemon is also hosting Sunset Movement sessions in the Commons, with Pilates classes scheduled for August 13 and 27.

Then there’s Salsa in the Park on August 8 and 22, featuring a beginner-friendly lesson followed by an open-air social with salsa, bachata and Latin rhythms. No experience is required, meaning your enthusiastic shoulder movements technically count.

And how about a movie?

For something slightly less aerobic, Cinema in the Park returns on August 7 with Inside Out 2, followed by a viewers’ choice screening on August 21.

Admission is free, and guests are encouraged to arrive with blankets, low chairs and dinner from Time Out Market Vancouver.

“Shopping mall” feels increasingly like an inadequate description. Between the park, the workouts, the dancing, the movies and a food hall filled with some of the city’s top culinary talent, Oakridge Park is shaping up to be Vancouver’s newest all-day playground.
