The best new movies on Netflix in April 2015

The Wachowskis’ Bound, Hot Fuzz, The Babadook and much more coming to the streaming service in April

By Time Out Film |

Sometimes life gives you lemons, other times, it gives you Jean-Luc Godard: Netflix announced a new batch of titles for the month of April, including the French legend’s most recent sensation, Goodbye to Language. (Netflix won’t be broadcasting the film in Godard’s original 3-D, but it’s still worth a peek.) Elsewhere on the menu: an early triumph from The Matrix’s Wachowskis, and 2014’s horror hit The Babadook. Here are five picks worth thumbing your remote for.

Our top five new movies on Netflix

Movies, Horror

The Babadook (2014)

Aussie Jennifer Kent’s supremely confident debut already feels like a horror classic, restoring the genre to its psychological prestige while turning the monstrous-mommy gimmick on its head. Inventive, recognizably real and scary as fuck, the film stakes out a shadowy domestic terrain last dominated by Roman Polanski.

Movies, Drama

Bound (1996)

A convicted thief (Gina Gershon) and a mobster’s wife (Jennifer Tilly) unite in pursuit of $2 million and a new life together in the Wachowskis’ lusty debut. Given their latest bomb, Jupiter Ascending, we’d love to see the sibling filmmakers return to this kind of concentrated craft.

Movies, Drama

Goodbye to Language (2014)

A boat sails into port. A naked woman pontificates while her male lover takes a loud shit that would shame Austin Powers’ Fat Bastard. A dog runs into a forest, then back out. Those are some of the images and sounds you’ll experience in Jean-Luc Godard’s playful, provocative latest. Just let it flow over you.

Movies, Action and adventure

Hot Fuzz (2007)

From the inspired team of silly Brits behind Shaun of the Dead, this is a delirious confection of cop clichés, intentionally deployed at breakneck pace. Ever wanted to see a supercop engage in a high-speed pursuit with a swan, or a chubby constable jump through the air, guns a-blazin’ like Chow Yun-Fat? This is your movie.
