What is it?
Brixton is one of the capital’s most vital neighbourhoods, and these adjacent indoor markets reflect its unique and varied flavour. In recent years they’ve become a place of foodie pilgrimage where hungry Londoners can grab a table at places serving seafood, superior pizza, Portuguese cuisine, Mexican food, Jamaican/European fusion and all manner of Caribbean delicacies. But they contain plenty for shoppers, too. A leisurely amble through the arcades reveals a treasure trove of independent outlets selling clothing, jewellery, homeware, art, antiques and unusual gifts. Leftovers is an antique and vintage fashion emporium favoured by costume-lovers and designers, while Cornercopia Homestore is the perfect place to pick up enamel pots, wooden spoons and unique cookware.
Foodwise, try Jamaican/European fusion seafood at Etta’s Seafood Kitchen, street-style Mexican food at Jalisco, French spot Cheese + Fizz, where you can sip on champagne while trying out cheeses, and of course, a multitude of Caribbean restaurants and takeaways (Fish, Wings and Tings is a favourite of ours). If you don’t fancy eating out, or just want to pick up something for dinner, there are fruit and veg shops and stalls, fishmongers and butchers like Dombey & Son, which has been in business for more than 30 years.

Brixton Village and Market Row are open from 8am to 11.30pm every day, except for Monday, when they close early at 6pm.
Time Out tip
On Saturdays, Brixton Station Road hosts a space that cycles between a flea market, a makers’ market, a vintage and retro market and, at the end of the month, a hybrid of them all.
