It’s 2018 and SpongeBob SquarePants is nominated for a Tony award. So, naturally, we asked him to cook us lunch.

To prepare for the awards show at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 10, the eponymous star of the hit new musical SpongeBob SquarePants spent the day with us. Ethan Slater is the 26-year-old who made his Broadway debut as the anthropomorphized sea creature and/or kitchen cleaning product, and mere months after taking the stage at the Palace Theatre, he was rewarded with a Tony nomination. (The musical also racked up nods for Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design of a Musical and a handful of others.) He also shared his old headshot with us, and he’s one of the lucky few actors who still looks exactly the same.

So what does Slater do before showtime? Our day with him involved a lot of selfies in Times Square, as he was recognized even without a yellow shirt and suspenders. He also flipped burgers for us at the midtown Bareburger, proving he’s just as skilled with a spatula in a kitchen as he is onstage. (Want to know what SpongeBob orders for lunch? It’s the Beyond Burger, a veggie burger option on the menu.)
