When the Global Power City Index drops its annual ranking, it’s less about bragging rights and more about magnetism – the cities pulling people, ideas and capital into their orbit. In 2025, that gravitational pull was unmistakably shifting east, with Asia claiming four spots in the top 10.

After years hovering just behind the podium, the Japanese capital has leapfrogged New York to claim second place overall – a first in the index’s history. The secret to Tokyo’s success on the rankings? Livability. Tokyo ranked number one for how well it actually works as a city, pairing ultra-efficient transport and enviable safety with a nightlife scene that’s officially the world’s best. Yes, even better than Berlin’s. Add a booming cultural exchange scene and improving environmental credentials, and Tokyo is a masterclass in urban balance.

The next Asian city to rank on the Global Power Index for 2025 was Singapore, coming in fifth place globally. Perennially strong in economy, research and accessibility, the Lion City continues to flex its status as Asia’s most polished all-rounder. It’s a place where boardrooms and hawker centres coexist effortlessly, and where global talent lands knowing the infrastructure will do the heavy lifting.

Coming in at number six on the list was the South Korean capital. Seoul’s ascent is powered by culture, and lots of it. The city continues to ride the global wave of K-culture, ranking highly for cultural interaction while quietly strengthening its livability and innovation chops. From late-night BBQ joints and hyper-connected public transport to world-class universities and a fast-growing startup scene, Seoul is proving that it’s both capable and cool.

The final Asian city to rank among the world’s most powerful was Shanghai, coming in eighth place globally. Shanghai’s ranking reflects a city in transition – still a heavyweight economic force, but increasingly defined by its cultural and international reach. The city performed strongly across economy and accessibility, with its sheer scale and connectivity keeping it globally relevant.
