It’s 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon, and the Moroccan riad-style courtyard of Basq House is buzzing. A honeymooning couple are clinking glasses in the pool, and groups of women are making friends from the comfort of their cushioned sun loungers – chatting about life under the shade of the palm trees.
Hiding down a quiet laneway just steps from Byron’s buzz, Basq House is the kind of boutique stay that feels less like a hotel and more like you’ve scored the keys to your stylish friend’s beachside mansion. And while the immaculate designer aesthetic is perhaps the hotel’s calling card (it was one of 35 Australian hotels to earn a Michelin Key in the inaugural round of awards), the friendly, communal, in-on-a-shared-secret energy is what keeps guests coming back. Here’s everything you need to know about this beautifully presented Byron gem.
Basq House is a 32-room hideaway built around a dreamy central magnesium pool, with airy, free-flowing communal spaces that blur the line between indoors and out. The vibe is eclectic but intentional – layered with art, handcrafted pieces and global influences, but never overdone.
While the communal areas are masterfully busy, the rooms dial things back to a calm, minimalist mood. Expect tasteful deep red tones, honey-hued timber finishes and a breezy, uncluttered feel. They’re kitted out with HD TVs (with Chromecast), Nespresso machines, minibars stocked with local treats and a classic book next to each bed for your nighttime reading. With six different room types to choose from, you’ve got plenty of options – with five rooms available in twin bed configurations, and a handful of connecting rooms available for bigger groups.
Not exactly – but you won’t go hungry. The reception doubles as a bar, pouring perfect poolside cocktails and a tight menu of breezy bar snacks – delivered to any of the hotel’s communal spaces (or your room, if you need a moment).
Continuing the home-away-from-home energy, the team will pour you a complimentary glass of bubbles on arrival, and by the pool, you’ll find a snack station with well-stocked jars of pretzels and nuts, and a bowl overflowing with apples. Breakfast is a similar situation: nothing fancy, but big pots of coffee and fresh pastries waiting for you when you come downstairs.
Plus, you’re steps from some of Byron’s best dining spots, so eating out is very much part of the experience.
The whole concept leans into that “stay at a friend’s place” energy, so service feels relaxed but thoughtful rather than overly formal. It’s the kind of place where you’re encouraged to settle in, pour a cup of coffee and make yourself at home over the chess board.
There’s no traditional gym, but honestly, you won’t miss it. The star is the central magnesium pool – framed by palm trees, cabanas and sun-drenched daybeds. It’s made for long, lazy afternoons (or, as they’d say, ‘basqing’). Bikes, surfboards and beach gear are also on hand if you’re feeling more active.
Beneath the hotel, you’ll find Navia Bathhouse: a gorgeous Scandi-style bathhouse with magnesium pools, saunas, ice plunges and a team of therapists on hand for massages and other treatments (best to book in advance). While not technically the same business as the hotel, guests of Basq House score discounted rates, and as Time Out’s key spa correspondent (a tough job, but somebody’t got to do it) it’s definitely worth a visit during your stay.
You’re right in the thick of it, but cleverly tucked away. Beaches like Main Beach, Clarkes and The Pass are all within easy reach, and you’re perfectly placed to explore the Cape Byron walking track and hinterland villages like Bangalow and Brunswick Heads. Restaurants, bars and boutiques are basically on your doorstep.
Because it nails that elusive Byron balance: central but serene, design-forward but unpretentious, social but still intimate. It’s a place to switch off, sink into the rhythm of the coast and feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem – without sacrificing any of the fun stuff.
