For one night a year, Boston’s most famous quiet zone officially throws out the noise policy. No need to keep your voice down as the Boston Public Library is rolling out the red carpet and raising the Big Top for its annual fundraiser.

Celebrating its fifth year, the BPL’s highly anticipated after-hours fundraiser, Night in the Stacks, is returning on Friday, October 23 with a wild new theme: the Midnight Circus. Hosted by the Emerging Leaders of the BPL, this annual bash has become the must-attend party of the year for young professionals and culture lovers. Last year's event was a celebration of all things spooky. This year, the library will transform into an immersive three-ring spectacle filled with magic, mystery and revelry.

The lineup of high-energy entertainment features live music from the Sweetbeats Band, a tarot card reader to predict your literary future, a mind-bending magician, roving circus acts and a fabulous raffle. To keep the circus humming, there will be a full open bar alongside curated small plates and decadent desserts. Guests are encouraged to embrace the theme with a dress code of "Midnight Circus Cocktail Attire"—dramatic, glamorous and slightly whimsical—classic eveningwear infused with the enchanting mystery of a vintage big top.

While the party is serious fun, it also does serious good: Last year’s gathering raised nearly $400,000 for the library’s free community initiatives, supporting youth literacy, public tech access, job-seeker resources and more. Organizers are aiming to smash previous fundraising records, and you can play a part. Plus, a portion of every ticket purchase serves as a tax-deductible donation, meaning you’re directly supporting public education while sipping cocktails under the courtyard stars.

If you’ve ever considered running off to join the circus, now you can do it for one night at one of Boston's premier historic landmarks. Snag your tickets now and for one night only, enjoy not being shushed for getting loud between the stacks.
