Capetonians, more often than not, dread anything to do with the Department of Home Affairs. Those with very little time to get their essential documents done will sometimes hazard a drive to neighbouring districts perceived to be less busy than those in the banks or branches of a busy city metro.
Now there is another option. A new department opening inside the Cape Town Civic Centre on Hertzog Boulevard, It also makes the City of Cape Town the first municipality in South Africa to host a national Home Affairs branch.
The office operates strictly by appointment and is located on the second floor of the Civic Centre, next to the City’s cash office. Its central position also makes it easily accessible by public transport.
The new branch means residents can apply for essential identification and travel documents at the same location where they can pay municipal accounts and access other City services.
‘It will now be easier and quicker to do more of life’s admin,’ said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

The City handed the space over to Home Affairs in June, with the new office becoming operational less than three months later. It is also expected to ease pressure on the busy Home Affairs office in Barrack Street.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the branch formed part of the department’s Home Affairs@home reform programme, which aims to bring services closer to where people live, work and travel.

The new Home Affairs office does not accept walk-ins. Appointments must be made using the department’s online booking system.
