If you are one of the 539,000 people who have applied for a new license but are still waiting for it, authorities have advised you to keep your receipt with you as proof, in case you are stopped and asked to show your license.

The Department of Transport states that the breakdown of the country’s only card-printing machine in February caused the delays, with the Western Cape reportedly being the worst affected.

While the machine is back online, the waiting period has stretched to six to eight weeks. On average, 10,000 licence card applications are received daily, with normal wait times usually between four and six weeks.

Motorists won’t be fined if they can show proof of application, and temporary licences are now being issued free of charge. So, keep that receipt handy in case of roadblocks.
