Shopping just got a techy twist. Checkers has rolled out South Africa's first-ever smart trolley – a scan-as-you-shop cart that promises no queues, no fuss, and full control of your basket spend.

The retailer's Xpress Trolley lets you skip the checkout queue by paying directly on the trolley.

The innovation, built by the ShopriteX team, is being trialled at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell and Checkers Constantia, with 10 trolleys at each store. A dedicated checkout lane with concierge support makes the process seamless.

Shoppers simply scan their Xtra Savings card to activate the trolley, bag their items as they go, and check out using the card linked to their Checkers Sixty60 profile.

The trolley is also meant to help customers with in-store navigation, showing product locations, promotions, and basket totals on its built-in screen.

"This pilot allows us to reimagine the in-store journey using technology for a more frictionless shopping experience," says Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Shoprite Group.

The move forms part of Checkers' push to become South Africa's most seamless omnichannel retailer. We can certainly see the potential to Bluetooth a shopping list through, making it even easier to tick off groceries as you go. But whether this innovation will be the future of grocery runs, or just another retail gimmick, remains to be seen.

Take a look at how the Xpress Trolley works:
