There are few South African foods better than a good old boerewors roll.

The sizzle of the boerie as it starts to cook... the smell of the spices and meat dancing inside the casing... the crack as you break it to sneak a taste before anyone else... the look the dog gives you when you don't 'drop' a piece on the floor.

Ok, now I'm officially hungry.

I love mine smothered in onions and tomato sauce. I know of folks who cram atchar on top, inside, and in-between - the hottest kind. Chutney is a favourite for many, too. Then there are those who go plain - not even butter on their roll. That's where the boerie itself does all the heavy lifting.

Knowing the importance of the boerie roll to South Africans, CapeGate Shopping Centre has launched a competition to find the best of the best.

They are calling on Kraaifontein, Brackenfell, and Durbanville high schools to bring the flavour, true South African gees, and their best boerie game for the CG School’s Boerie Braai Challenge Competition.

The competition explained

It's all about showing pride for your school, community, and country.

Teams from the various schools will need to serve a Heritage-inspired boerie roll with big flavour, a clever story, a stand that draws a crowd, and enough spirit to rock CapeGate.

The winning school will be awarded R20,000 in cash from CapeGate Shopping Centre to boost school initiatives and needs. Additionally, there will be four category prizes up for grabs, with a R2,500 CapeGate Gift Card awarded for:

  • Best Gees
  • Best Looking Stand
  • Best Taste
  • Top Sales

“Heritage Month is a special time to celebrate the flavours, stories, and spirit that bring our communities together, and this challenge gives schools a fun way to do exactly that,” says Zoë Enslin, Marketing Manager of CapeGate Shopping Centre.

“We are looking for ideas with heart, flavour, and school pride. Whether it is a secret sauce, a family-inspired topping or a stand that gets the crowd cheering, we want to see what our local schools can bring to the braai.”

How schools can enter

Your boerie idea and recipe, team details, stand concept, and plans for rallying supporters need to be sent to marketing@capegatecentre.co.za by Friday, 7 August 2026 at 23:59.

Entries must also include all the ingredients and inspiration behind the boerie roll, the proposed selling price, and what the school would do with the prize, should they win.

From all the entries received, four schools will be selected to participate in the live event. This is where they will cook, sell, and present their boerie rolls to the hungry public and judges on Saturday, 5 September 2026.

So, it is vital that you wow with your concept email entry.
