The 11 best mountain getaways near Cape Town

From family-friendly houses to romantic hideaways, these unforgettable escapes will help you trade the Mother City streets for a rocky mountain high.

There are weekends for restaurants and gallery-hopping. Weekends for big-city glamour. And then – often just as the novelty of the new year is starting to lose its shine – there are weekends when your brain is crying out for a little peace and quiet in crisp mountain air. That’s your cue to drive north or east out of town, and keep going until the phone signal fizzles out.

Happily, the countryside around Cape Town is very good at serving up that sort of escape. Within two or three hours of the city you can trade traffic for fynbos slopes, river gorges, rock pools, scenic valleys and some very persuasive stoeps.

The best mountain getaways aren’t all doing the same thing, either. Some are made for couples who want a hot tub – get steamy in our fulll hot tub guide over here – and a bottle of wine with nobody in sight. Others are better for families, hiking groups or a long-overdue gathering of friends. But all of them deliver the same essential promise: fresh air, dramatic scenery and the excuse to do very little at all but sit back and reboot.

Our favourite Cape mountain cabins

1. GlenDonald Cottage, Cederberg/Witzenberg

If dramatic mountain scenery and wild swimming are high on your wishlist, GlenDonald Cottage is paradise. Set at the headwaters of the Olifants River in the southern Cederberg, the 4500-hectare property is cut through by the Olifants River Gorge and framed by rugged peaks, with fynbos and birdlife adding to the sense that you’ve gone properly off-map. The main attraction, though, is the river access: GlenDonald overlooks the crystal-clear Visgat pool, which is exactly as tempting as it sounds. The accommodation is rented as a whole and sleeps up to 13 across the Main House and the Swallows Croft cottage next door, making it especially good for extended families or a group of friends. Expect fireplaces, a deck, a pool and plenty of room to spread out. It’s not a couples’ cabin; it’s a big, beautiful shared escape for swimmers, hikers and outdoor-loving groups.

2. Stonewood Mountain Cabin, Bainskloof

Pressed for time and can only leave in the thick of Friday rush hour? Stonewood’s convenient location just the other side of Bain’s Kloof Pass makes it manageable to shut down the laptop in the afternoon and get out there in time to watch the sun set across the Mostertshoek Twins. Set in the 660-hectare Mount Bain Private Nature Reserve in Bainskloof, the glorious terrace here serves up views across farmland, fynbos and the folded mountain of the Breedekloof Valley. The cabin sleeps six, with two queen bedrooms plus additional single beds in the living area, so it works well for families and small groups. Inside, it’s all warm timber, a stone fireplace, double-volume living space and floor-to-ceiling glass to let those views wash in. Two bathrooms – one with a claw-foot bath, and another with a nature-facing shower – add a dollop of extra luxury here. To do? There are wineries on the doorstep for a day of tasting, restaurants for lazy lunches and a host of walking trails on the property.

3. Mount Bain Cabin, Bainskloof

For couples wanting something more romantic and a touch more polished, Mount Bain Cabin is one of the best two-sleeper mountain escapes near Cape Town. Also set in Mount Bain Private Nature Reserve at the foot of Bainskloof Pass, this timber-frame Nordic-style cabin sits high on the mountainside with uninterrupted views over the Breedekloof Valley. Designed specifically with couples in mind, the appeal lies in the balance between comfort and seclusion. There’s a wood-fired hot tub, outdoor bath and shower, hammock nets, a splash pool, indoor fireplace and even Wi-Fi if you need to pretend you’re reachable. There’s also river access for swimming and lilo-floating, plus a waterfall hike in the reserve. This is one for anniversaries, romantic weekends and anyone who wants ‘off-grid’ vibes without giving up the good bits.

Drive time: 1h30. You’ll need a 4x4 for the steep gravel track up to the cottage. Shuttles can be arranged.

4. Cedarpeak, Groot Winterhoek

Set in the pristine fynbos at the top of the Dasklip Pass, with sweeping views across the Citrusdal Valley, Cedarpeak offers everything from couples’ cottages to larger group houses. The downside? Some of them are quite close together, meaning you might not get the sense of seclusion you’re after. The sweet spot, though, is Rooibos Cottage: a five-sleeper that is a little set apart from the rest, so you get all the same farm charm with a touch more privacy. It is a good fit for families and friends travelling together, with plenty of activities to keep you busy. There are hiking trails from the doorstep, or the serious trails of Groot Winterhoek Nature Reserve, a short drive away. A large swimming and fishing dam for hot days, and striking sandstone formations to admire. In other words, there’s plenty to do, but the setting is still quiet enough for a proper switch-off.

5. Tierkloof Mountain Cottages, Tankwa Karoo

If your idea of a mountain getaway involves feeling truly cut off from the world, Tierkloof is hard to top. Set on a 1200-hectare property on the fringes of the Tankwa Karoo outside Ceres, this is a place that’s all about big skies, lonely slopes and silence to make your ears ring. Dragon Rock is the quirkiest and most memorable of the three cottages on offer, tucked away among boulders and looking out over a riverbed to the distant plains. It sleeps four in two bedrooms, making it ideal for two couples, a small family or anyone who wants privacy without total isolation. There’s a veranda, a large timber deck, a plunge pool and a separate wood-fired hot tub, so it works in both summer and winter. Best for romantics, stargazers and anybody wanting a proper middle-of-nowhere escape without leaving creature comforts behind.

Drive time: 2h30. While ‘normal’ cars will manage the 20kms of gravel road, a high clearance vehicle is better for the last stretch on the farm.

6. Tierhoek Organic Farm and Cottages, Robertson

I’ve been going to Tierhoek for almost 20 years, and it’s long been one of my favourite farm stays in the Cape. Set in the Noree Valley, about 20 minutes before you hit Robertson, at the foot of the Langeberg mountains, the farm offers a range of cottages for different kinds of escapes, from romantic weekends to larger family gatherings. For couples, Stone Cottage is the real standout: it sleeps two and sits above the Spaarkloof dam, surrounded by fynbos and mountain views. The fireplace is a delight, and the plunge pool might just be the most refreshing dip in all of the Breede River valley. Most importantly, there’s plenty of privacy. For larger groups, Fig Tree House and Cottage is the one to book, sleeping up to 14 guests, with a wraparound veranda and a pool area protected from the afternoon winds that can whip up the valley. It’s self-catering all the way, but there’s an excellent restaurant and bakery at Rooiberg wines, at the end of the valley.

7. Rusty Gate Mountain Retreat, near Villiersdorp

For larger groups looking for a mountain getaway, Rusty Gate is one of the most useful options around. Set in the Riviersonderend Mountains – between Greyton and Villiersdorp – this 290-hectare farm has big valley views and more than enough accommodation to suit just about any gathering. There are five self-catering cottages sleeping four to six each, plus Eagle’s Eyrie, a communal entertainment unit that has dorm-style rooms to sleep 20, so it’s especially good for reunions, milestone birthdays or multi-family weekends. The cottages sit in the shade of pin oaks and come with two bedrooms each, decorated in an unfussy farm style with plenty of charm. The farm offers plenty to keep people busy: hiking trails, mountain biking, a dam with kayaks, swimming and a foefie-slide zipline.

8. Springsteen Cabins: Radio Nowhere, Tulbagh

I can’t lie; I’m a bit of a Springsteen fan. The man, that is. So, when I spotted these mountainside beauties online, I knew they deserved a second look. Springsteen Cabins has locations in both Tulbagh and the Breedekloof (near Rawsonville), and the setup is the same across both: off-grid eco-cabins that tap into the grandeur of the location, but with a healthy dollop of Scandi-chic luxury. They’re all named for a Springsteen track, and perhaps my favourite cabin on this ‘album’ is Radio Nowhere, hidden away on Oudekloof farm outside Tulbagh. It was the first in the portfolio too, and is set on the slopes for epic views down the valley. It sleeps two and is clearly built for couples: compact, private and romantic without trying too hard. There’s a wood-fired hot tub, indoor and outdoor showers, a gas hob, a few thoughtful pantry basics, and just enough design polish. You’ll love the natural spring that bubbles above ground nearby, and walking trails begin almost at the cabin doorstep, so you can be as active or horizontal as you like.

Boppin’ through the wild blue / Tryin’ to make a connection with you / This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?”

Sing it Bruce!

9. Mount Grey Eco Cabins, near Greyton

Set between Caledon and Greyton in the Klein Swartberg conservation area, Mount Grey Eco Cabins gets the balance right between back-to-nature escape and low-key luxury. There are three cabins on the farm, and they all have much the same oto offer in terms of facilities. But, Pincushion is our pick for its setting tucked up against the mountainside: a one-bedroom bolthole for two with uninterrupted Overberg views and luxurious finishes, with lazy spaces to justify lingering outdoors for most of the day. Expect a wood-fired hot tub on the deck, a field bath, boma braai area and a deliberately private design that helps the cabin feel hidden in the landscape rather than plonked down on top of it. Pincushion is off-grid, and they suggest you leave the kids at home (we second that), so it’s about slowing down to reconnect.

10. Simonskloof Mountain Retreat, Koo Valley

Simonskloof is the most rugged option on this list, and that’s exactly the point. Set in the Koo Valley, about 50km west of Montagu, this off-grid mountain retreat is aimed at people who come looking for a proper digital detox. If that sounds like you, then Faraway Cottage is the pick of the bunch: the most remote of the cottages, sleeping four in two bedrooms, with an open fireplace, pit braai and an outdoor bush bathtub. There’s no mobile signal, and Wi-Fi is only available on request, so distractions are kept to a minimum. What you do get is direct access to nearly 60km of hiking trails through deep gorges and up serious peaks, plus rock pools and a properly down-to-earth atmosphere. This is best for adventurous types looking for mountain silence over polished luxury.

11. Melozhori Treehouse, near Stormsvlei

If your pockets are deep and you need to impress someone special, Melozhori’s Treehouse is a pretty spectacular option. Set on Melozhori Private Game Reserve near Stormsvlei in the Overberg, the Treehouse sits in a secluded valley with fantastic views and complete privacy. The Treehouse sleeps two adults in the lap of luxury: wood-fired hot tub, fire-pit deck, built-in braai, pizza oven, indoor fireplace, outdoor shower, bean-to-cup coffee machine, Wi-Fi, air-conditioning… you name it. The giant hammock is ideal for long, lazy afternoons à deux. Because it’s on a (predator-free) game reserve rather than just a farm, there’s an added sense of wilderness. Guided drives can be booked, but there are also hiking and biking routes on offer.  Best for honeymoons, anniversaries and anyone who wants their mountain weekend with a dose of wow.
