Ready to cry? March will be a month of melodrama at Cinema Cruzeiro, which returns to the Carlos Avilez Auditorium, in the Cruzeiro Building (at the Estoril Arts Academy), with a programme devoted to the impossible loves, family conflicts and overpowering passions that have marked cinema history. The “Cinema no Cruzeiro” cycle takes place over five Mondays, always at 9PM, with free entry.

Kicking off the programme on 2 March is Wuthering Heights (the 1939 film, not the recent adaptation by Emerald Fennell that has been keeping book purists awake at night), which tells the tragic story of Heathcliff and Cathy. Next, on 9 March, comes Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Nicholas Ray, a portrait of youth in turmoil forever associated with James Dean’s intensity.

On 16 March, The Pride and the Passion (1957), directed by Leo McCarey, will be screened – a story of a romance interrupted by an accident that became a major reference point for American romantic melodrama. On 23 March, the screening is dedicated to Written on the Wind (1957) by Douglas Sirk, presented in its original version, offering a critical look at ambition, desire and failure in post-war America.

The cycle concludes on 30 March with Far from Heaven (2002) by Todd Haynes, starring Julianne Moore, a contemporary revisitation of classic melodrama that recaptures the colours, framing and social tensions of the 1950s to explore racism, homosexuality and social conventions.

There’s more in April, but instead of tales of love and tears, expect musicals such as Singin’ in the Rain or Velvet Goldmine.

Avenida das Acácias, 2 (Estoril). 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 Mar (Mon) 21:00. Free Entry.
