On the night of 31 October, several monuments will be bathed in purple light to mark the 271st anniversary of the disaster. The Cascais fort is one of them.

The Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Luz will be illuminated in purple throughout the night of 31 October, an intervention forming part of the nationwide campaign led by Movimento Recordar 1755. Cascais Municipal Council’s participation marks 271 years since the earthquake that devastated much of the Lisbon region and the coastline along the Line.
The tremor of 1 November 1755, followed by a tsunami and fires, wreaked widespread havoc across Cascais homes, religious buildings and defensive structures. The visual tribute on the Citadel’s central fortress seeks to honour that local memory while serving as a wake-up call on the vital need to prepare communities and urban infrastructure for future seismic events.
Several Portuguese municipalities are joining the initiative with similar visual tributes across historic landmarks, uniting in a shared call for community awareness and civic protection readiness — including Lisbon, which will see Terreiro do Paço and Cristo Rei lit up as well.
