The initiative “Quem se atreve?” (who dares?) is scheduled for 05.00 on the morning of 25 April at the Forte de Santo António da Barra.

Setting an alarm for the early hours of 25 April may sound ambitious, but this year it will be worth it. On the morning that marks the 52nd anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution, Cascais-born fado singer Cuca Roseta, one of the best-known contemporary voices of the traditional Portuguese genre, will perform songs associated with the revolution at sunrise, in a stunning seaside setting.
Known in Portugal as the “songs of April”, these are protest and folk songs that became symbols of the peaceful military coup that ended the country’s dictatorship in 1974 and restored democracy.
The initiative, titled “Quem se atreve?” (“Who dares?”), takes place at 05.00 at the Forte de Santo António da Barra, a historic coastal fort where dictator António de Oliveira Salazar used to spend his holidays. It was also here that, in 1968, Salazar famously fell from a chair – an incident that led to his removal from power and marked the beginning of the regime’s decline.
Admission is free, but registration is required.
