Italian artist Filippo Fiumani, who has been living in Portugal for several years, has created an artwork using over 300 single-use plastic bottles, which will be on display at Alapraia Primary School in the municipality of Cascais. The initiative aims to raise awareness within the school community about the importance of environmental sustainability.
The bottles were collected by students from various schools across the municipality, as part of a joint project between Cascais City Council and Águas de Cascais. The goal is to eliminate the use of single-use plastics and encourage sustainable habits among younger generations.

The abstract piece is a “fusion of light and reflection,” says Filippo Fiumani in a statement. “Suspended in mid-air, this abstract installation intertwines recycled plastic bottles and LED neon, creating a play of light and transparency that symbolises the transformation of waste into art. Collected by the students, the bottles reflect a shift in habits, while the school promotes the use of aluminium flasks. The piece shines as a visual reminder of environmental impact and the need to preserve our water resources.”
Thanks to the same project, the local council has distributed 20,600 reusable bottles – made from 66% recycled materials – to all primary school students in Cascais, as well as to teachers and staff across the municipality’s schools.
