Titled “Hell is Other People”, the new temporary exhibition at Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, in Cascais’ Museum Quarter, brings together works by Portuguese artist Ana Torrie. It opens May 16th, and can be seen until October 26th.
Curated by the artist herself, along with Catarina Alfaro, the exhibition presents the ways in which the artist challenges the traditional conventions of printmaking through a diverse series of works. It features large-scale printing plates as central pieces, as well as graphic installations, sometimes accompanied by a sound component.

The exhibition takes its title from the famous phrase by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, which alludes to the inner conflicts triggered by the gaze and judgement of others - a central theme throughout the show. Power struggles (as well as those for freedom and equality), fear and suffering, the decline and destruction of the world as we know it are some of the subjects and elements depicted in the works.
Ana Torrie’s exhibition at the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, focused on large-scale pieces, runs simultaneously - and in dialogue - with a presentation of the artist’s graphic work at the Tinta nos Nervos bookshop and gallery in Lisbon, from May 17th to July 12th. These two distinct venues together highlight the work Torrie has been developing – and which is now celebrated through these two exhibitions.
