The Japanese fine-dining restaurant Kappo, run by chef Tiago Penão in Cascais, was honoured at Tuesday’s gala in Funchal. Maré and Sult have also been added to the Michelin Guide’s recommended list.

When Kappo reopened in May 2025 with a fresh new look after two months of refurbishment – more elegant and refined, without the red lighting that had defined its early years, featuring a new counter and just 12 seats – it seemed closer than ever to its goal: a Michelin star. And now it has arrived. At Tuesday’s Michelin ceremony, held on 10 March in Funchal, the Japanese restaurant led by chef Tiago Penão was finally recognised by the famous red guide.
Based on the Japanese omakase tradition, Kappo offers a nine-course tasting menu (€135) that highlights techniques rather than specific dishes, such as zensai, mushimono, shiizakana and sushi.
There are also new additions among the Michelin Guide’s recommended restaurants in Cascais: Maré, by José Avillez, and Sult, by Nelson Soares.
Fortaleza do Guincho, which until now had been the only restaurant in Cascais with a Michelin star, retained the distinction it first earned in 2001 (when the kitchen was led by French chef Marc Le Oudec, with Antoine Westermann as consultant). After Vincent Farges and Miguel Rocha Vieira, the restaurant at the Fortaleza do Guincho hotel is now headed by chef Gil Fernandes.
