Time Out's first visit to Espace Général in Alcabideche – a set of three modern buildings with huge floor-to-ceiling windows surrounded by gardens – was to check out the culinary project Barro. But the lives of our journalists can't just be eat, eat, eat, so this time we went to peek at another new addition to the space: the Prescription pilates studio, which was born in 2023 in Lisbon and hasn't stopped growing (like us, if we don't squeeze in a few workouts between restaurant visits).

The project by Vanessa Motte, who lived for over a decade in Paris, New York and London, caught everyone's eye right at its debut about three years ago by stepping away from the more classic, physiotherapeutic, slow and silent side of pilates – and in Cascais it is no different. With 12 brand-new reformer machines in a single large room painted in earth tones, full of mirrors with motivational messages, a 1970s-style patterned wallpaper in the back and a few fluorescent-yellow accents, Prescription offers 55-minute sessions with loud, upbeat and energizing music, blending the best of pilates with strength training.

To celebrate the opening, the Cascais location (the brand's sixth, after São Bento, Saldanha, Alcântara and Parque das Nações in Lisbon, and Foz in Porto) is running a promotion of three classes for €55.

The space also features lockers, changing rooms – all with showers fully equipped with body wash, shampoo, conditioner and even makeup remover – and a small shop next to reception with gear that promises to make the whole experience even cooler, from grip socks to leggings and tops.

Espace Général, Rua Hermenegildo Pulquério 201A, Shop 8, Alcabideche. Daily 7pm-9am
