D.M. Pulley's first novel, The Dead Key, was selected as the Grand Prize Winner of the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. Join Literary Cleveland for a discussion with Pulley about the story behind her compelling first novel, the research she conducted to bring its details to life, and her upcoming works.

An atmospheric and richly detailed mystery, The Dead Key weaves together the stories of Beatrice Baker, who begins work at the First Bank of Cleveland shortly before its mysterious collapse in 1978, and Iris Latch, the civil engineer hired to survey the abandoned but perfectly preserved Bank building two decades later. As she toils amid the bank’s ransacked offices and forgotten safe-deposit boxes, Iris is drawn into uncovering the dark secrets of the building’s sordid past – a past that includes Beatrice’s mysterious disappearance. With the story coming together and dangerous forces on her trail, Iris soon realizes that the key to unlocking the riddle of the bank’s final days could cost her both her job and her life.

D.M. Pulley works as a Professional Engineer specializing in the rehabilitation of historic structures and forensic investigations of building failures. The Dead Key is a mystery novel based on the author’s structural survey of an abandoned building in Cleveland. She lives in Northeast Ohio, with her husband and two children, and is currently at work on her second novel.
