Summer is here, so let’s get to the beach. Sure, Europe’s great cities are beloved for their museums, monuments, culture, and cuisine, but sometimes you just want to lather on the suncream and spend a day doing nothing in the sun. Luckily, many of Europe’s most intriguing urban escapes double up as coastal destinations, offering sightseeing and seaside bliss in equal measure.

We’ve gone for a quality-over-quantity approach here, as this is a collection that could run long. The six destinations are all about that most blissful of adventures, one spent wandering ancient streets and admiring world-class architecture before spending some serious time working on that tan. When the sun dips below the horizon, these cities come alive through fantastic food and electric nightlife, sometimes taking place on the very sands you spend the day lounging upon. Can’t choose between a city break and a beach holiday? Are we still doing the ‘get you a destination that can do both’ trend? These spots fit the bill.

Which European city has the best beaches?

As far as we’re concerned, this one isn’t up for debate: it’s the Spanish capital of Barcelona. One of the many, many draws to this incredible city is its proximity to a never-ending string of beautiful beaches, from Bogatell to Sant Sebastià. You can find our full guide to them here. But that’s an obvious choice – why not read on, for more under-the-radar picks by our expert.

Europe’s best beach cities

1. San Sebastián, Spain

When it comes to the great beach cities of Europe, San Sebastián is arguably the gold standard. The Beach of La Concha is the main event, a crescent-shaped stunner of golden sands and blue waters, backed by sumptuous Belle Époque architecture and the city’s exquisite confidence. Europe’s most graceful beach? You can form your own opinion, but La Concha is undoubtedly in the discussion. Zurriola Beach is the livelier option, and its consistent Atlantic waves attract surfers and the rest. Ondaretta is the third of the city’s main beaches and one that offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere than La Concha and Zurriola. San Sebastián is a stroller’s paradise, and its elite gastronomy scene (the most Michelin Star restaurants per capita, don’t you know) provides fuel for the fun.

2. Chania, Crete, Greece

Truth be told, any number of Greek cities would be worthy additions to this collection, but few Mediterranean destinations combine top-tier beaches and historic delights quite like Chania. The world-famous pink sands of Elafonissi Beach dominate the headlines, while the vivid waters at Balos Lagoon are straight out of a dream, and that’s not an exaggeration. Closer to Chania proper, beaches like Agia Marina and Golden Beach tick all the boxes for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports, while the city does its thing in the background, all colourful buildings, character-filled tavernas, and history on every street.

3. Palermo, Italy

Beach getaways are usually defined by the peace that comes with lying in the sun, but Palermo is something else entirely. The Sicilian capital is a lively place, one with centuries of complex history, infectious chaos, and stretches of golden sand for much-needed respite. Mondello is the most famous of its beaches, and for good reason, another crescent-shaped stunner with soft sands and turquoise waters. It gets plenty busy in the summer, so those seeking serenity should make a beeline for Addaura and its flat rock sunbathing opportunities. And when you’re done with the beach for the day, get lost in Palermo’s famous street markets, gorge on some of the best seafood around, and embrace the magic of a truly unfiltered world.

4. Split, Croatia

Croatia’s coastline is one of the most popular in Europe, but nowhere in the country combines beach bliss with urban excitement like Split, and it isn’t all that close. Croatia’s second-largest city lives completely in sync with the waters of the Adriatic, with its busy ferry port just a short walk from Diocletian’s Palace, the undisputed star of its past, present, and future. The city’s most popular beach is Bačvice, as much for its sands (a rarity in these parts) as its lively atmosphere and shallow waters. Žnjan is the city’s largest beach, a stunning urban-renovation success story with a charming promenade and space for beachgoers of all types. And, this being Croatia, you are only ever a short ferry away from an island paradise.

5. Barcelona, Spain

If you’re looking for a combination of a major city with some high-quality beaches, it doesn’t get better than Barcelona. This bucket list beauty embraces its coastline with boundless enthusiasm, proving once and for all that there is a place for urban beaches in Europe. Barceloneta Beach is the most iconic stretch of sand, and an afternoon here is a must, whether you are a newbie or a Barca veteran. Bogatell is the city’s best beach, a Blue Flag spot with plenty of space and sea views for days. Barcelona’s beach scene is every bit as vibrant and cosmopolitan as the city itself, with plenty of colourful cocktails to fuel the fun. Is there anything this city can’t do?

6. The Hague, Netherlands

Southern Europe understandably dominates the continent’s city beach scene, but there are many excellent options up north. While The Hague might be best known for its enduring role in international diplomacy and justice, it doubles as a city with broad, sandy beaches, dramatic windswept dunes, and one of the liveliest seaside districts going. Scheveningen is the best beach in the country, marrying the grace and grandeur of a nostalgic resort with an energetic spirit, a beach where you are just as likely to see bungee jumping as romantic strolling. Kijkduin is the quieter alternative, a place where the presence of those impressive dune landscapes maintains peace. Of course, the weather doesn’t always comply, but there’s a lot to be said for wrapping up warm and enjoying the beauty of a northern beach while doing battle with the winds of the North Sea. If it all gets a bit too chilly, there’s no shortage of bars, restaurants, and inns for you to take refuge and warm up.
