Bard in the Botanics announces 2015 programme

A mix of comedy, drama and history will make up the 2015 season of outdoor Shakespeare festival Bard in the Botanics.

‘The Unlikely Wonders’ season will showcase four iconic plays from the legendary playwright at the Botanic Gardens.

'Love’s Labour’s Lost', directed by Gordon Barr, kicks off the season, running Wednesday June 24-Saturday July 11. It’ll be the first time in almost 50 years that the ultimate battle of the sexes has been performed on the Scottish professional stage.

The magical 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream' is the second production. Showcased Thursday July 2-Saturday July 11, it’ll be directed and adapted by Emily Reutlinger and presented as part of the festival’s Emerging Artists Scheme.

One of Shakespeare’s most controversial and dramatic plays, 'The Merchant of Venice', is up next. Gordon Barr returns as director and it’ll be performed Saturday July 11-Saturday August 1.

The final production is in the 2015 season is 'Richard II', the tale of a king who unknowingly sows the seeds of his own downfall when he presides over a dispute between two of his subjects. Directed and adapted by Jennifer Dick, the historical play makes its Bard in the Botanics debut and will be performed by a company of four actors within the Kibble Palace Glasshouse Tuesday July 21-Saturday August 1.

Tickets for all shows are on sale now so grab a blanket and picnic (along with warm clothing to guard against the unpredictable Scottish weather), and get ready for an evening of wit and wonder from one of history’s greatest writers.
