Tucked away one street back from Glasgow’s bustling West End, Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens feels like stepping into a grand private residence. Spread across five interconnected Victorian townhouses, the place is a maze of duck-egg blue corridors, stained-glass windows and William Morris carpets that lead to mahogany-and-leather lounges and rather decadent bedrooms.
Here, you’re looking at old-world luxury – dark wood panelling, velvet armchairs, and soft lighting gives the ground floor a distinctly gentleman’s club vibe. The curved leather sofa sitting proudly in the bay window is practically begging you to set up there with a whisky for the night.
What are the rooms like at Hotel du Vin Glasgow?
You’ll find 49 rooms here, all of which come with good wi-fi, large TVs, tea and coffee facilities and plenty of room for activities. Mine was the Robert Mondavi suite, named after the American winemaker, and it was bigger than most east London flats I’ve seen. And things are OTT; big beds topped with hand-sprung mattresses and Egyptian cotton linen, thick carpets underfoot and rich, classic décor.
The bath in my bedroom was a particular highlight. Positioned right in the bay window, it’s great for a soak, though worth remembering to close the curtains before accidentally giving the neighbours a surprise. Despite the hotel’s size, the room felt peaceful and private, and I slept exceptionally well.
What are the facilities like at Hotel du Vin Glasgow?
Downstairs there’s a whisky room where guests can sample an impressive selection of Scotland’s single malts and blends, plus a cosy Cigar Shack stocked with cigars alongside cognacs and Armagnacs for pairing. As someone who hasn’t smoked a cigar since her best mate’s wedding (and still recoils at the memory), I respectfully skipped that part. Still, the vibe were high here, luxe but not too stuffy.
What is the food like?
Restaurant One Devonshire Gardens is a destination in its own right (it’s their namesake after all), and perfect for a very special occasion with chandeliers, velvet seating and very good food.
The restaurant holds three AA Rosettes and focuses on seasonal Scottish ingredients. In 2024, Head Chef Martin Thliveros returned to the kitchen where he once worked as a Chef de Partie back in 2007, bringing more than two decades of Scottish hospitality experience with him. The cooking feels confident and refined, while staying pleasantly unfussy. They also catered thoughtfully to my vegan diet, serving one of the best plates of homemade pasta I’ve had in a long time.
What’s the area like?
You’re firmly in Glasgow’s West End, one of the city’s most charming neighbourhoods. A short stroll brings you to the spectacular Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, a vast red-sandstone building filled with everything from fine art to natural history.
Nearby, you’ll also find the leafy Glasgow Botanic Gardens, perfect for wandering through its Victorian glasshouses or along the River Kelvin. The surrounding streets are packed with indie cafés, vintage shops and bakeries. And if you need a quick lunch stop, try Naked Soup, a tiny little place known for hearty homemade soups and freshly baked bread. There are plenty of spots for perfect fuel pre or post a drizzly, chilly afternoon wander – which is kind of Glasgow’s whole thing.
