English painter George Stubbs’ iconic painting ‘The Kongouro from New Holland’ - or ‘Kangaroo’ as it’s better known - is on loan to the Hunterian from the National Maritime Museum. The first depiction of the animal in western art, painted immediately following Stubbs’ part in Captain James Cook’s ‘first voyage of discovery' to the Pacific, it forms the centrepiece of a special exhibition looking at famous paintings of New World animals by George Stubbs that were commissioned by the Hunterian’s founder Dr William Hunter together with related natural history specimens, artefacts and prints commemorating the European discovery of Australia.
