Exclusive hipster enclave this ain’t. Like the Southside’s best pubs, The Bell Jar is welcoming and traditional, while keeping an open mind towards progress. It’s a charming ’50s-style saloon, cosy and intimate.
On our visit, a trio of older gentlemen perched on stools at the bar while discussing the SPL’s surprising title race. In the dining area there were members of the local music community – punk poets and folk singers – enjoying the last of the weekend.
The place seems equally beloved by dogs as well as humans: when we were there, a pair of border collies snoozed in the corner while an inquisitive terrier greeted us merrily. All the humans are here for the same reason: pints, chatter and – most importantly – the chance of food.
Speaking of the menu, the pick of the dishes was the peat-smoked haddock with potato and leek gratin, a creamy dose of comfort food, perfect for a Sunday evening. The spicy baked aubergine with cherry tomato was a treat too, with the heat adding punch but not in an overwhelming way. There were also plenty of craft beers on offer: we went with the lightly carbonated, delightfully chocolatey West Black brew.
Despite being a little bit pricier than the likes of the nearby Queen’s Park Cafe (where five of the seven draughts are over £4), The Bell Jar is still undoubtedly a winner. We’ll be back soon.
