American saxophonist Anthony Braxton is back in the Akbank Jazz Festival after 17 years. An established name in the business, Braxton’s career dates back to the 1960s, when he started studying both classical and jazz music and later composition in Chicago. He went on to form a free jazz trio called the Creative Construction Company, subsequently lived in both New York and Paris, and became a professor of music history, improvisation and composition at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He takes the stage with the Diamond Curtain Wall Quartet, aka James Fei on sopranino soprano and alto saxophone, Taylor Ho Bynum on the cornet and other wind instruments and Erica Dicker on the violin.
