The chef-turned-shopowner Burcu Esin received our award for ‘Chef of the Year’ in 2009’s Time Out Istanbul Eating & Drinking Awards and has nearly 20 years of experience in both New York and Istanbul. The main attraction here is, undoubtedly, the cupcakes... Inspired by the multitude of shops specialising in cupcakes in New York, Esin aims to bring a bit of that culture to Istanbul. ‘Whether it’s an event, a party, a birthday, an anniversary or a wedding – or even a break-up – we offer cupcakes as a recipe for instant happiness,’ she says.
With that kind of philosophy behind them, it comes as no surprise that the cupcakes are made using only the freshest ingredients in everything from flavoured genuine butter cream to Belgian chocolates, ripe bananas and carrots to fragrant strawberries and citrus zest. As to compliment the cozy enviroment here in the Cupcakery, even the breakfast here gets a homey name: ‘Grandma’s Breakfast’. It’s got the usual suspects: tomatoes, cucumbers, honey, olives, butter, cheese, jam varieties and eggs... And since The Cupcakery’s pretty much like home, you can order breakfast at any time of the day. In addition to classics, you’ll also find breakfast items like the Avocado and Mexican omelettes and eggs Benedict, served with two poached eggs on rustic bread. A Turkish specialty, çılbır (poached eggs and yogurt) gets jazzed up with Hollandaise sauce and garlicky yogurt here. Other flavours on the menu include pancakes, French toast, cakes, meat- and cheese-filled pastries and muffins.
