South African fans, start checking your calendars, and maybe your seats. After Coldplay's Chris Martin hinted at new destinations for the ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour, speculation is mounting that South Africa could be next.
During the band's penultimate Wembley concert on 6 September, the frontman told the crowd that their Music of the Spheres tour wasn’t over just yet. With 138 more shows planned and dates for 2027 on the way, Martin also let slip that the tour would resume “somewhere in southern Africa in about 18 months”
Yes, you read that right. Southern. Africa.
Cue the collective meltdown of fans across Mzansi, because if Coldplay does announce dates here, it’ll be their first time on South African soil since their 2011 tour. And honestly, it’s about time.
Of course, excitement comes with a side of drama. Remember Coldplaygate, the viral July 2025 scandal where Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and Head of HR Kristin Cabot were caught in a cheeky moment on the jumbotron at a Massachusetts concert? If Coldplay hits South Africa, you might want to “hide your side” (or better still, leave them at home) while watching the screens because anything can happen!
Nothing’s been officially confirmed yet, but with Martin hinting at Southern Africa, the stars are aligning for a possible Joburg or Cape Town date. Given Coldplay’s record of selling out stadiums worldwide, we’d bet on FNB Stadium in Johannesburg and DHL Stadium in Cape Town as the most likely venues.
With international acts hot on South Africa’s radar, Travis Scott landing in Johannesburg this October, Hugel set for November, and Lauryn Hill performing at the DStv Delicious Festival this weekend, fans are hoping that Coldplay could be next on the list of unmissable live concerts.
Until then, Joburgers, keep your playlists on repeat and your bank accounts in check. If Coldplay’s coming, it’s going to be one of the hottest tickets of the decade.
Now, imagine if Coldplay and BTS teamed up for a South African show. Fans would probably pass out at the thought. In case you missed it, rumours are also swirling about the Bangtan Boys coming.
