Update: Walmart is a solid new contender
Walmart has officially opened its first South African store at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort, marking the retail giant’s debut on the continent. We braved the traffic jam and eager crowds to stop by and found wide aisles, a broad mix of groceries, household goods, electronics, apparel and everyday essentials.
While many South Africans (us included) expected shelves lined with American goods, the store’s offerings are largely similar to what you’d find at major local retailers (many shoppers have compared it to Game of Makro who are also part of the Massmart Group), with only a small section dedicated to imported items, mainly cereals, sweets, and a few novelty treats. What does stand out is the fresh food section, which includes halaal-certified meat options, as well as a hot kitchen for ready-made meals, making it a practical stop for everyday shopping.
The new store is also rolling out a 60-minute delivery service around the area via the brand’s dedicated Africa app, adding a new layer of convenience for local shoppers (YAY!)
In a landscape dominated by familiar names, Walmart’s arrival adds welcome competition to Joburg’s retail scene. For shoppers, another strong contender on the floor can only be a good thing.
After months of speculation following Massmart’s announcement that international retail giant Walmart would be opening its first store in South Africa, it’s finally official – the very first Walmart store will open at Clearwater Mall in Johannesburg.
Although the exact opening date is still under wraps, Miles van Rensburg, Massmart President and CEO, says, "It’s an experience that blends the best of global retail with a proudly local touch. Since announcing the arrival of the first Walmart-branded stores in South Africa, the excitement has been incredible, and our team is proud to deliver this new and meaningful chapter in South African retail."
What makes Walmart different?
If you’ve found yourself wondering, "Do we really need another grocery store?", you’re definitely not alone. After all, many of us stick to what we know. But Walmart is aiming to shake things up.
While full details are yet to be confirmed, the retail giant’s well-known "Every Day Low Prices" philosophy means customers can expect to save money on their everyday shopping, not just during sales or promotions.
And let’s be honest, with the rising cost of living, that sounds like a dream come true.
What this means for local employment
According to Massmart, the new Clearwater store will employ over 80 associates, led by Store Manager Onicca Mothapo.
"I’m looking forward to opening the doors to a customer-focused store that offers exceptional service, Walmart’s Every Day Low Prices, and that cares deeply about our local community. I’m particularly proud of our partnership with Africa Food for Thought. Through this initiative, our store will be supporting eight early childhood development centres in the broader community, starting with donations of appliances, catering equipment, and multi-purpose furniture," says Mothapo.
What’s on offer?
Shoppers can look forward to a mix of local and international brands, featuring a diverse range of products, including sweets and snacks, fashion, home appliances, frozen foods, and fresh produce.
So, if you’ve ever found yourself doomscrolling and drooling over American mukbangs, soon, you might be able to join in without leaving Jozi!
