Joburgers are urged to stay safe as a storm is expected to hit the city this weekend.

Joburgers are in for a stormy weekend after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Friday from 2 pm until midnight.
The weather service has cautioned that the storms could cause damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, properties and vehicles, as well as pose a risk to livelihoods and livestock. Residents across Johannesburg are urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads.
SAWS has also warned that essential services could be disrupted, including schools, healthcare facilities, communication networks and power supply.
Flooding is another concern, particularly in low-lying areas and on bridges, prompting motorists to drive carefully and avoid flooded roads.
Drivers are further cautioned that poor visibility and slippery conditions could lead to accidents if adequate precautions are not taken. Power surges may also occur, potentially affecting critical services.
So, what does this mean for anyone planning a weekend out? It simply means being prepared: drive safely, confirm that your destination is not affected by outages, dress for wet conditions, carry an umbrella, and be ready for sudden changes in the weather.
The good news is that Johannesburg still offers plenty to enjoy indoors during rainy spells. With the weekend coinciding with month-end, many residents will still be heading out for entertainment, and the weather doesn’t have to ruin those plans. Check out our list of recommended things to do on a rainy day.
By staying informed and taking sensible precautions, Joburgers can still make the most of their weekend. After all, fun doesn’t have to stop just because of the weather.
