Citizens to Preserve Overton Park says
Join our virtual letter-writing party to urge Mayor AC Wharton to ban parking on the Greensward! Please take a few minutes RIGHT NOW to email our outgoing mayor (mayor@memphistn.gov) and ask him to protect our historic Greensward for future generations to enjoy.

Here's the letter we sent today:

20 October 2015

Dear Mayor Wharton,

We are writing to thank you for your excellent service to our city, and to ask you to reconsider your position on the Overton Park Greensward issue. Every weekend since early spring, and many weekdays as well, the Memphis Zoo has parked hundreds of vehicles on the Greensward and pocketed all of the parking fees. As you know, this activity began several decades ago and now happens more than 60 times each year.

Despite our community's dedicated efforts in recent years to work together with the Zoo to address their severe parking and traffic issues, Zoo leaders have refused to build a parking garage or take any other real steps to solve the problems they create. Instead they continue to abuse our parkland and treat dissenting citizens with contempt.

It is wrong that Zoo leaders are being allowed to take over public parkland for private profit. It is wrong that Zoo leaders are being allowed to threaten arrest and bodily harm to citizens who merely wish to protect our limited green space from destruction.

We ask that you take immediate steps to ban Greensward parking, as you did last year, and hold Zoo leaders accountable for solving their parking problem as soon as possible. Please don't let the destruction of the historic Overton Park Greensward be part of your legacy.

Sincerely yours,

Jessica Buttermore
