The blues are proof that great beauty can be created out of great pain. It is music forged in a shared experience of struggle and oppression, and a testament to the endlessly creative abilities of the human spirit. We’ve all had the blues; just different shades of blue. Sunglasses are a reminder that viewing the world through different lenses can open all of us up to new viewpoints, ideas, and connections. The way we choose to hear and see the world shapes how we choose to live in it.

So, we want to hear about your lens. Tell us about your shade of blue. How has Memphis history shaped your perspective?

1) Find an old pair of sunglasses and pop the lenses out.
2) Write your word on the lens and give the other to a friend!
3) Tweet your lens using the hashtag #ShadesofBlue, share your story on Facebook, and bring it to the concert! We will display the lenses and discover the different perspectives of our community. Don’t have sunglass lenses? We will have extras at the event, so everyone has a chance to participate!

With Facing History Together, everyone can be a part of our ongoing work to examine racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to make informed decisions for a brighter future for Memphis. Join us as we celebrate the history, the people, and the music that unites us all.

Hogwild BBQ and refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!
