It’s going to get ugly for Miami business owners who violate the city’s new guidelines. On Monday, Mayor Francis Suarez announced that the City of Miami would be enforcing stricter penalties for establishments found disobeying the new rules of reopening. “Before, if you didn’t comply, you could get shut down potentially for as little as a day. Then, you could come into compliance and open up within the day,” said Mayor Suarez, referencing Miami-Dade’s previous emergency order. It states, in part, that businesses found in violation of the guidelines would be shut down for 24 hours and allowed to reopen once they filed an affidavit demonstrating that corrective action was taken.
In the City of Miami, violators incur harsher penalties. First-time offenders will be required to close down for 10 days, second violations will result in a 15-day suspension while a third-time offender will be required to shut down their business for 30 days. It’s unclear whether the city will require an affidavit but the county still will, so business owners should keep that in mind. Cities across the county are taking additional safety measures as well, such as requiring the use of masks in public (they were always a requirement indoors). Countywide, alcohol sales were banned at establishments after midnight and beaches will close over the Fourth of July weekend. As of June 30, the county’s positive test average was 18.16 percent, with nearly 1,500 new cases each day over the last week.
