Nearly half of American adults are single. But as many singletons know, some cities are built better than others for being single and loving it. Turns out, the best shot at enjoying dating might be a move to Florida. (We were also surprised.)

According to WalletHub’s latest Best States for Singles study, the Sunshine State ranks number one in the country, beating out New York, California, Texas and Illinois thanks to a potent mix of dating opportunities, entertainment options and economic momentum.

The ranking is based on nearly 30 indicators of dating friendliness, from the number of single adults to restaurant density and entertainment options. Florida earned a total score of 68.21, landing near the top nationally in dating opportunities and “romance and fun,” even if it landed mid-pack for dating economics.

WalletHub notes that Florida residents search for dating sites and terms like “online dating” more than most states, suggesting a population that’s actively looking for connection. Combine that with strong job growth, and you get a place where singles are both socially and economically positioned to date.

So what does that mean for Miami? Pretty much exactly what you’d expect: If Florida is the best state for singles, Miami is one of its most dynamic playgrounds. And a big part of Florida’s appeal comes down to the sheer volume of things to do, from amusement parks and music festivals to fitness centers and public parks. In other words, built-in date ideas everywhere.

Of course, Miami dating culture has its own reputation, but the data suggests that cities that perform well for singles typically offer a balanced single population, lots of activities and strong social ecosystems, all of which South Florida has in spades.

For Miami singles, the takeaway is pretty simple: The state is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Whether you’re swiping on Brickell rooftops, meeting someone at a Wynwood gallery opening or bonding over cafecito in Little Havana, you’re living in what data now calls the best state in America to be single. Now to stop being single? That's up to you, not Florida.
