With so much of our art programming canceled or going virtual this year, it’s exciting to see one opening sort of on target. Superblue, a new venture dedicated to producing and presenting large-scale experiential art, will now open its doors in the spring of 2021. Originally scheduled for December, the massive destination is pushing back its date to keep things safer for folks in Miami.

The estimated 50,000-square-foot space will open with “Every Wall is a Door,” a dynamic exhibition comprising large-installations by three experiential artists. There will be an immersive environment by Es Devlin, a London-based artist and stage designer; a transcendental digital experience by teamLab, a Tokyo-based interdisciplinary group of artists; and an enveloping light-based Ganzfeld work by James Turrell, all on long-term view. Visitors will be guided through the no-touch installations in a controlled, timed flow, limiting capacity and ensuring that all participants socially distance themselves. Masks, of course, will be enforced.

Superblue was founded by Pace Gallery executive Marc Glimcher and former Pace London president Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, along with Christy Maclear, though it remains a totally separate entity from the NYC-based, blue-chip gallery. Though similar to a gallery, it will compensate the artists for their long-term installations with a portion of the ticket sales while their pieces are on display, which can be up to 18 months.

While spring 2021 is still months away, we’re already looking forward to getting another shot at one of Miami’s busiest creative seasons. Fingers crossed everything goes as planned.
