Warm, social and unpretentious, Cucina Franca feels like dining at a stylish friend’s table rather than in a formal restaurant. The room is compact and welcoming, with rustic touches and eclectic details that reflect the kitchen’s unfussy approach to serious cooking. This is the kind of place where a casual lunch easily turns into lingering glasses of natural wine well into dinner.
Expect a mid-range, accessible price point for Milan: small and sharing plates generally sit in the €8-€18 range. The tasting menu – a great way to experience the kitchen’s range – is €40 per person (without drinks) and includes six dishes plus dessert (half portions). It’s good value given the quality of ingredients and thoughtful execution.
Cucina Franca shines with vegetable-forward, shareable plates that reflect the seasons. While the menu changes regularly, highlights often include South American-inspired dishes like empanadas, courtesy of Argentinian chef Facundo Castellani.
Cucina Franca sits in Viale Friuli, at the far end of the Porta Romana neighbourhood. From here, wander up Porta Romana for drinks and architecture, or make your way to Fondazione Prada for cutting-edge exhibitions and aperitivo at Bar Luce, a pastel-coloured cafe designed by Wes Anderson.
