I visited this beautiful new Montreal sandwich shop and it may be the most stunning in Canada

Vintage on the outside and retro-polished on the inside, this Montreal gem is serving up some of the best sandwiches in town.

I knew the sandwiches were going to be killer the second I walked in.

Between the smell of sauteed onions and peppers on the grill and the line-up (locals out for a Sunday afternoon stroll and the baby stroller crowd), Renzo felt like a sure thing.

Add in some next-level design that somehow makes the space feel both timeless and brand new, and it’s a winner.

Renzo’s old-school deli vibes deliver serious nostalgia: vintage on the outside, and gleaming burgundy, beige and pale blue tiles, ballpark mustard-yellow and stools and mid-century touches inside.

It’s no wonder it’s located in Plateau Mont-Royal’s Mile End—one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods.

Scanning the menu, our eyes bounced from the Philly Cheesesteak (labelled “messy” on the side) to the Pan Bagnat (a riff on a classic nicoise salad in a sandwich) before finally settling on one Buffalo Chicken and a Turkey Club.

Sliding from the stainless steel counter, we were lucky enough to nab a two seater booth with views of the action in the open kitchen.

The architecture and design studio Ménard Dworkind (MRDK) are the creative brainchild behind Renzo Sandwich as a nod to the classic retro diner.

MRDK also used a similar yellow and chocolate brown palette for the interior of Le Red Tiger—one of the city’s best Vietnamese restaurants with an outpost in Time Out Market Montréal.

The Buffalo Chicken’s blue cheese aioli, fried chicken, buffalo sauce, pickles, lettuce and spray was a dream (although we wouldn’t have said no to more aioli and sauce).

And the Turkey Club was the perfect, satisfying mix of bacon, smoked turkey, red pepper purée, pesto mayo, bomba, lettuce and spray (we could’ve done without the fior di latte).
