First we were one of the coldest places in the world this weekend.

Now, a major winter storm could dump up to 20 cm of snow on Montreal.

A yellow snowfall warning has been issued by Environment Canada, cautioning significant impacts expected due to snow accumulation.

According to a report by MétéoMédia, with temperatures hovering between –15 and –20 °C, the snow will be exceptionally fine and dry, and accumulations will build more quickly.

This will create the impression that snow is piling up rapidly on roads, sidewalks and driveways.

Moderate winds of 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 50 km/h, will further complicate conditions.

This mix of wind and powdery snow may lead to reduced visibility, sometimes abruptly. In more exposed areas, particularly rural regions, snow will be easily lifted and blown across roadways, making driving especially hazardous.

A lesser-known but potentially dangerous phenomenon could also occur: drifting snow.

Small, wind-formed ridges of snow can sweep across open roads, and when they harden or freeze can catch drivers off guard and trigger sudden, risky reactions.

Combine drifting snow with reduced visibility, and conditions could quickly become treacherous.

When will the snow hit Montreal?

Starting Sunday afternoon and continuing through Monday, a total accumulation of up to 20 cm of snowfall is expected.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 cm per hour are expected Sunday evening and overnight.

Powdery snow will be easily blown by the wind, leading to reduced visibility in some areas.

Cold temperatures combined with snowfall will make road surfaces slippery.

These conditions could significantly impact traffic during peak commuting hours.
