This morning, approximately 280,000 Hydro-Québec customers are experiencing power outages due to a significant spring storm sweeping through the province.

At 10 a.m., the power company reported that 74,000 customers in Montreal and 81,000 in the Laurentians were affected by power outages.

Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for most of the region, with up to 25 cm of snow expected to accumulate.

The forceful late-season winter storm that has hit Montreal has brought substantial snow, rain and  strong northeast winds.

Environment Canada warns that non-essential travel should be postponed.

The storm is set to continue through Friday, with more travel disruptions expected.

Motorists should anticipate worsening and slippery road conditions during the latter part of this week.

And with northeasterly winds reaching gusts of up to 60 km/h, there is a possibility of more scattered power outages.

Hydro-Quebec has close to 1,000 workers on the job, with many power lines on the ground due to strong winds and the heavy weight of snow on the branches.
