Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts says
1898 Jazz Orchestra Live! features an all-star collegiate jazz orchestra, made up from among the best young college players from Phi Mu Alpha chapters across the country. The 1898 Jazz Orchestra (named for the year of the Fraternity’s founding) plays every three years at Phi Mu Alpa conventions, with the aim of reawakening communities to the style, impact and musical quality of jazz.

Directed by multiple Grammy Award winner Gordon Goodwin, a composer/arranger and studio musician from Los Angeles who leads the most popular Big Band on today’s music scene, Big Phat Band. Gordon has also scored or arranged for several feature films, including Gone in Sixty Seconds, The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and The Incredibles, which won him an individual Grammy.

Wayne Bergeron will be featured on Trumpet. Wayne is the lead trumpet in the Big Phat Band, and played lead for many years with Maynard Ferguson’s band. Wayne is a phenomenal player, and the arrangements played in this concert will be traditional Big Band jazz with a modern edge.

The concert is presented by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and sponsored by the Sinfonia Educational Foundation. Proceeds benefit the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in New Orleans.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity was founded October 6, 1898 at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA. It is the world’s very first, oldest and largest men’s fraternal society dedicated to the advancement of music and the promotion of brotherhood. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has over 250 collegiate chapters and colonies at universities across the United States.

All of Phi Mu Alpha’s public concerts are offered free of charge to veterans of the US Armed Forces and their families. Veterans can claim these tickets in person at the box office by presenting a valid active military veteran’s ID or discharge papers.
