DJ JAMES CARPENTER spins a mixture of nudisco, spacefunk, David Bowie, deep house, and indie dance

"A pair of local New Orleans artists have put together a limited-time “Bowie Gras” art exhibit that incorporates the flare of Carnival season as well as Bowie’s infamous style. The show, which features three distinct photo series inspired by Mardi Gras and the recently departed English rocker, debuted this past Saturday at New Orleans’ Bywater Art Lofts Gallery.

JOSH HAILEY and BRITTANY SCHALL, the creative co-collaborators behind the Bowie project, enlisted a diverse array of volunteer models to cover their otherwise naked bodies in glitter, rhinestones and light for the various photo series. The results capture the ways in which the Mardi Gras spirit and David Bowie’s artistic legacy overlap. For instance, one piece shows what it may have looked like if the Starman had designed Mardi Gras Indian suits on flesh instead of fabric.

TOM HARVEY: "I usually start paintings with an emotion I’d like to convey, without the limitations of language. As a DJ and a musician, music flows through every aspect of my life and painting is no different. The music I listen to while painting influences each layer individually. It’s in everything. We are co-conspirators! The work is process intensive and it’s common for 10 or 20 layers to manifest within the paintings. To complete this Devine conspiracy, this cosmic dance, they need a viewer, and that’s you! I hope you find delightful and interesting things deep within them, so Let’s Dance! Put on your red shoes and dance the blues!“

The free showcase features the aforementioned vibrant imagery, along with music, complementary snacks and the opportunity to have your own face glittered up Bowie-style."
