TransActive Gender Center, as it exists today, is the culmination of years of personal experience, observation and engagement in issues affecting the lives of transgender children and youth by founders Jenn Burleton, Hayley Klug and Kaig Lightner.

Rising to meet the growing needs of families raising gender diverse and transgender kids, TransActive was founded in 2007 as one of the first independent non-profit organizations to focus exclusively on ending the decades-long practice of dismissing childhood gender diversity as nothing more than a ‘passing phase’ or an indication of future gay or lesbian sexuality.

TransActive Gender Center founder and current executive director Jenn Burleton has been a seminal figure in United States-based education an advocacy related to transgender identity in children and youth, having founded, influenced or advised other well-known transgender youth advocacy organizations like; Trans Youth Family Allies, Gender Spectrum, the Gender Odyssey Family Conference and Trans Youth Equality Foundation.

The Mission of TransActive Gender Center has evolved and adapted over the years as a reflection of the growth in organizational capacity to meet continually expanding needs of children, youth and families, while at the same time remaining true to its original purpose as, “an unequivocal advocate for the rights of children and youth to express their gender identity as they experience it and to receive the care necessary to prevent or overcome psychological and physical trauma and of their families’ right to be supported in their efforts to provide their children with every opportunity to live their lives free of oppression and societal stigmatization.”

TransActive Gender Center values the natural diversity that exists in human biology and development, as well as the immutable right of every person to express their gender identity as they experience it without infringement on their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
